Statement of the Working Group for an ASEAN Human Rights Mechanism on the arrest of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi

The Working Group for an ASEAN Human Rights Mechanism expresses its continued dismay at the recent state of affairs involving Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and her aides. We call on the Government of the Union of Myanmar to rectify this disturbing situation and to implement its 2003 Roadmap to Democracy which includes the commitment to release political prisoners such as Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. National Workshop Forum on the AHRB

On February 13, 2009, the Task Force Detainees of the Philippines (TFDP) and the Philippine Alliance of Human Rights Advocates (PAHRA), both members of the Philippine Working Group for an ASEAN Human Rights Mechanism, held a National Workshop Forum on Civil Society inputs to the Draft Terms of Reference (ToR) for the establishment of an ASEAN Human Rights Body (AHRB). With support from the Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development (FORUM-ASIA) around 45 representatives from non-government and people’s organization attended and actively participated in the discussions.

UP Professor Heads UN Advisory Body
Hernandez to lead disarmament, security board

MANILA, Philippines—Carolina Hernandez, professor emeritus at the University of the Philippines, has been named chair of the United Nations Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters which advises the UN Secretary General on matters involving global security, nuclear arms and energy.

Hernandez, who first joined the UN Advisory Board in January 2006 at the invitation of former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, was informed of her appointment as chair of the 20-member international advisory committee in a letter dated Dec. 29, 2008, signed by Sergio Duarte, UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs.

The 67-year-old Hernandez replaces Polish diplomat Adam Daniel Rotfeld of the Polish Institute of International Affairs. The other members of the international body are diplomats and security experts from United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Russia, China, Israel, Belgium, Brazil, Mexico and Sri Lanka.
