Operationalizing ASEAN Declaration on the Elimination of
Violence Against Women
The National Commission on the Role of
Filipino Women (NCRFW) hosted the regional workshop to operationalize
the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women
(DEVAW) in the ASEAN Region.
DEVAW was adopted and signed by ASEAN foreign ministers
during the 37th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting (AMM) held in
June 2004 in Jakarta, Indonesia. The declaration strengthens
“regional cooperation, collaboration and coordination
for the purpose of eliminating violence against women in
the region, either individually or collectively (NCRFW,
21 November 2005)."
Workshop areas of concern included data collection and
sharing, research and information dissemination, service
delivery to victims, response to offenders, women’s
political and economic empowerment, gender mainstreaming,
law reform and government –civil society cooperation.
The workshop was held on 21 November 2005 at the New World
Hotel, Makati City, Philippines and gathered 33 delegates
from government organizations in ASEAN member countries.
